Last Updated on March 1, 2021

Rangpur division is the 7th division of Bangladesh which was established on 25 January 2010. The northern and northwestern parts of Bangladesh is covered by the Rangpur division ( 25°50′N, 89°00′E). Previously it was under the impression of the Rajshahi Division. The Rangpur division comprises eight districts and 58 subdistricts.

The name of Rangpur city was came from the previous version “Ranggopur”. “Rango” indicates joy or happiness, as well as Pur, means a region or area and for that Rangpur is certainly a region of peace and happiness.

As one of the oldest municipalities in Bangladesh, Rangpur was declared as a metropolitan city in 1869. The first ever mayor of Rangpur City Corporation has been Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu .

As in tourism largely we prefer the southern part of Bangladesh as Cox’s bazaar or Chittagong hill tracts. The least we think of as the northern region of the country which is the Rangpur region. Mostly because of our ignorance of the area of the north.

When it comes to visiting a place with a fresh natural environment with lots of traditional architectural landmarks the best option that pops into my head is the Rangpur division. When you are planning for a budget trip you might choose your destination to Rangpur. I bet you won’t regret it.

Still confused? Before taking any specific decision let me give you a tour of Rangpur region with an overview of things you need to know about Rangpur Division.

History of Rangpur division: Ancient to present

History of Rangpur: Ancient to present The river Teesta Streaming through the region Rangpur brings it with quite the history. Historically said that back in 1575, a trusted general Raja Man Singh of the Mughal Emperor Akbar took over Rangpur. The whole Rangpur region was fully integrated into the Mughal Empire in the year 1686. Yet one of the Mughal administrative headquarters was situated at Ghoraghat in 1687. Rangpur existed to be the fourth capital of Ahom kingdom. The king Rudra Singha (1696-1714) of Ahom kind of shifted the capital from Garhgaon to Rangpur. Rangpur was initially recognized as Meteka.

The land of the Rangpur region was generously known for the cultivation is of Indigo (Neel). The villagers called this Indigo crop color‘ ‘Rang.’ and the name ‘Rangpur’ Originated from this estate. The British emperors used to force the farmers of the Rangpur region to cultivate indigo which includes the pain and horror of this part of history in this area.

Rangpur is considered one of the earliest established municipalities in Bangladesh. Back on 16 December 1769, Rangpur was acknowledged as a District Seat (Zila Sadar) in 1769 and 1869, it was announced as a city, Under the administration of Raja Janaki Ballav Sen, a regional building was made in 1892. As a feature of building up the city region, he also ordered the uncovering of the Mata Shyama Sundari Khal in 1890. The myth says that to determine the continual event of infection harming the district, Shyama Sundari directed the removal of this canal. So this canal unfortunately keeps up just in name. Around 2010 Rangpur Division was formed with eight districts.
